Description
One fascinating cultural aspect of the Glades is the story of the Gladesmen. These resilient individuals built small homes and made their living traveling through the “river of grass.” To cross the terrain, they built narrow wooden skiffs about 2 feet wide and up to 18 feet long, using long wooden poles to move through the shallow, muddy water. They hunted alligators, deer, turkeys, rabbits, hogs, turtles, and other wildlife to support themselves and their families.
Jack Shealy keeps the old ways alive and helps to preserve this disappearing Florida Heritage. Mr. Shealy is intriguing, diverse, entrepreneurial and a strong proponent for the Florida Everglades. More may be found about Jack Shealy and his family at jackshealy.com. For the sake of this description, I shall stop here but suffice it to say that as one who has lived in this area for 40 years, a lot has changed, and not for the good, due to over-development and greed (T.Haney, 2026).
The Gladesmen blend begins with a fresh green-floral, like standing in the river of grass as the wind blows softly through the glades. The aroma moves to a cool resinous tone, much like moving from open grass plains to a resinous scent such as that found when taking a break under tall cypress trees teaming with Spanish Moss and dry down to a mossy base with a smooth hint of dry woods.
